Penang BN: Teng for Tg Bungah, Jahara dropped, 60 pct 'virgins'

Penang BN today announced its candidates for the 14th general election at the state Gerakan state headquarters on Jalan Macalister.

State BN chief Teng Chang Yeow, who attended the announcement, later handed over the “surat watikah” (authorisation letters) to the candidates contesting Penang's 13 parliamentary and 40 state seats.

"Of 53 candidates, 60 percent (31) are newcomers, virgins who will contest for the first time, with the youngest aged 31," Teng said to loud cheers from the crowd.

"Whether you like or not, come out and ensure all our candidates win. We have to defend Putrajaya and become a strong opposition force in Penang if we cannot beat them," he added.

Teng, who is the state Gerakan chief, is confirmed as the candidate for the Tanjung Bungah state seat.

Eight of the 10 Umno incumbents are retained while former state opposition leader Jahara Hamid has been dropped from her Teluk Ayer Tawar state seat.

Jahara will be replaced by newcomer Zamri Chee Ros. Umno is keeping its incumbents in the three parliamentary seats the party won in 2013.

MCA will field candidates in four parliamentary seats, Gerakan in three, MIC, one and Umno, five.

Of the 40 state seats, MCA will contest 10, Gerakan, 13, MIC, one and Umno,16.
