Nurul Izzah faces ‘fantastic’ fight, says Penang Umno

10 to seek re-election, 31 new faces announced in Penang BN election line-up.
Penang BN says there are 31 new faces among the 53 nominated to contest in the general election.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno has promised to give PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar “a fantastic fight” in the general election contest for Permatang Pauh, a seat held by her parents in turn for eight terms since 1982.
“We will give a fantastic fight. We welcome Nurul to Permatang Pauh. I think she is going to have a very tough fight,” state Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman told reporters.
A “formidable team” of Umno candidates has been lined up for the contest, he said after the Penang Barisan Nasional slate was announced.
This morning, PKR announced that Nurul Izzah would be the Pakatan Harapan nominee for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency. Her mother, party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, is to contest in Pandan, Selangor.
PAS has said it would field state Youth leader Afnan Hamimi Taeb Azamudden.
The Umno team in the contest comprises Permatang Pauh Umno leader Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said, and the three nominees for the state assembly seats within Permatang Pauh: They are: Abu Bakar Sidekh Zainul Abidin (Seberang Jaya); Anuar Faisal Yahaya (Permatang Pasir) and Suhaimi Sabudin (Penanti)
The Penang BN line-up was announced by state BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow today. He said 31 of the 53 candidates (60%) were new faces; only 10 of the rest were being fielded for re-election.
Teng said seven of the new candidates are below 40, with the youngest being 32 years old. “We are contesting to win. If the voters want us to govern Penang, we are ready, we have the experience,” he said.
