Battle for Langkawi: Incumbent banks on five-decade age gap

GE14 | Close to five decades separate the two in terms of age and Langkawi's incumbent lawmaker Nawawi Ahmad is hoping this will give him an edge over Dr Mahathir Mohamad on polling day.
Conceding that his opponent's mental faculties are still sharp, the 57-year-old engineer argued that the former premier's age posed limitations.
“He is heading towards 100 and as a human being, there will be physical limitations in terms of energy and time.
“He may not be able to work round-the-clock like us who are younger, perhaps (he can work) just for a few hours,” he told reporters this afternoon.
The BN candidate said while he respected the Pakatan Harapan chairperson, he is, however, confident that Langkawi voters would want someone who can do the work.
“I believe the voters will choose a candidate who can work night and day for them in the area.
“An elected representative is someone who will work on solving the people's problems. So I am of the opinion that the people in Langkawi will support BN,” he added.
In the 2013 general election, Nawawi won the island parliament seat with an impressive majority of 11,861 votes.
Prior to that, he was also the state assemblyperson for Kuah, which falls under the Langkawi parliament constituency, since 2004.
Mahathir, who turns 93 in July, has picked the popular tourist destination to re-launch him into Parliament and to take his oath as the seventh prime minister if Harapan wins the coming general election.
Mahathir was prime minister for 22 years until his retirement in 2003.

Nomination for the 14th general election is on Saturday while polling would take place on May 9.  - Mkini
