IPOH – Barisan Nasional’s (BN) performance in the general election will hinge on the party’s ability to prevent resentment and internal problems among its members.
BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said candidates and party members must placate any resentment among those who had been passed over as candidates.
While Zahid stressed that the candidates had been chosen after careful deliberations, he admitted that it was impossible to make everyone happy during the selection process.
“This will surely invite resentment from those who were not named as candidates which could create problems,” Zahid said during the announcement ceremony of the Perak BN candidates here today.
He reminded the candidates not to gloat over their nominations, as other hopefuls would have been left disappointed because they had not been chosen.
“If there are problems among those in this group, immediate steps must be taken at this crucial time before nomination day (April 28),” he said.
“We must win their hearts and minds. Remember that we don’t represent ourselves as individuals, but Barisan Nasional.”
Zahid also urged the candidates and machinery to solve problems in hotspots or flashpoint seats, adding that victory in those areas would solve any intra-party problems.
While acknowledging external challenges from the Opposition and independent candidates, Zahid said the party needed to focus on regaining seats in Perak.
“We must achieve a two-thirds majority in the Perak state assembly, and this time, Perak must contribute more BN parliamentary seats than it did in GE13,” said Zahid.
“This must be a present for our BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak.”
In GE13, BN won 31 of the 59 available state seats in Perak.
