RoS only stumbling block for Hindraf to contest in GE14

P-Waythamoorthy

PETALING JAYA: All is looking well for Hindraf’s plan to partner with opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH) as three of its component members have reacted positively to the proposal.
The only stumbling block left is Hindraf’s efforts to become a registered political party that will enable it to contest in the 14th general election, said Hindraf leader P Waythamoorthy.
“Our lawyer S Karthigesan went to the headquarters of the Registrar of Societies (RoS) last week to meet the director but it was to no avail.
“Prior to that, we had sent several letters to them to follow up on our registration, but they haven’t responded. It’s very obvious they are evading us,” he told FMT.
This, said Waythamoorthy, signified the ruling government’s fear of Hindraf’s ability to pull in votes in GE14.
He said if the RoS approves Hindraf’s application, the Indian-based organisation will be able to fill the void for an Indian-representative party within PH.
“Grassroot Indians make up 65% of the total Indian voters.
“We have been the voice of this group, hence the reason why the government is trying to prevent us from becoming a registered political party.”
Asked what his backup plan was if Hindraf’s application was not approved in time for the upcoming general election, Waythamoorthy said he was discussing the possibility of having his candidates contesting under the banner of PH components.
It’s a plan he had suggested to PH leaders, including its chairman, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, added Wathamoorthy.
“We will have to come to an understanding with PH. But if PH’s application to contest under one logo is approved, then we won’t have a problem.”
He also said that as a sign of solidarity with Hindraf, all four PH components will participate in a Hindraf-organised mega rally this Saturday.
The rally is to spearhead a movement titled, “Zero vote for BN”. Waythamoorthy said the campaign will be launched by Mahathir.
PKR’s vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP’s parliamentary whip Anthony Loke will also be attending.
“We will go all out to campaign that no vote should go to BN. We are saying that because (Prime Minister) Najib Razak didn’t fulfil the promises he made to Hindraf, which is to undo 50 years of injustice to the Indian community.” -FMT
