GEORGE TOWN: The board of governors of a Butterworth Tamil school feels its headmaster was transferred out due to political reasons.
SRK (T) Mak Mandin school board of governors chairman R Arunasalam said the transfer of the HM, V Tamilchelvi, was “unfair” and demanded that the education ministry reinstate her.
“I am disappointed that the state Education Department did not make any initiative to consult the board of governors before effecting the transfer.
“We know Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan has justified the transfer of the HM on the grounds of routine administrative reasons.
“But how are we to believe that when the HM was transferred out within three days of the chief minister’s visit? We want the HM to be reinstated.”
The board will be meeting MIC president Dr S Subramaniam and Kamalanathan next week to air its concerns, said Arunasalam, a well-known local philanthropist and businessman, at a press conference in Komtar today.
The HM was transferred to SJK(T) Perai within 72 hours of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s visit to the school.

Lim, his deputy P Ramasamy and other top Penang government officers had visited the school to hand over a RM110,000 donation for the expansion of the school and kindergarten building.
Ramasamy had alleged that this was the second transfer for Tamilchelvi. He said the HM was similarly transferred to SRK (T) Mak Mandin earlier this year after he had paid a visit to her previous school, SJK(T) Bukit Mertajam, in his capacity as state Education Committee chairman.
Ramasamy, who was present at the press conference today, said calls for him to show proof that the HM’s transfers were politically motivated were unnecessary.
He said he had reliable sources who had informed him that the HM was told to “lock the gates and doors” if the Penang CM decided to visit the school again.
“You should have locked the school if state government officials were coming, a source told us when the HM was grilled by state education authorities.”
Tamilchelvi had told FMT that she did not want to comment on claims of her transfer being politically-motivated and would comply with all directives as she was a civil servant. -FMT
