Exco claims surau attack seen as attempt to cause unrest, calls for calm



Selangor state executive councillor Ahmad Yunus Hairi has condemned the attempted firebombing of a surau in Damansara Damai.
The exco, who overseas Islamic affairs, said the incident is viewed as an attempt to create racial and religious unrest in the state.
In view of this, he urged all quarters to exercise restraint.
“I call on the people of Selangor of all races and religions not to do anything that would stoke racial and religious enmity.
“Let us celebrate our diversity... so that this state which we love would continue to prosper,” he added in a statement this afternoon.
Yunus also praised the police for apprehending the suspects who are believed to be involved in Sunday's attack.
Yesterday, the police detained a third suspect and are seeking a remand order. Two others, who were arrested earlier, have been remanded until Nov 28 to facilitate investigations.
According to news reports, a beer bottle containing flammable substance was hurled into the surau's compound. It landed near the entrance and a fire broke out.
Nobody was injured in the incident. At the time, there was a congregation of 20 performing subuh prayers at the surau.
Police are investigating the case under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance.- Mkini
