A survey by PKR-linked Invoke claims that Pakatan Harapan may be able to win the next election, with "Malay" support for the opposition bloc and BN almost neck and neck.
According to the survey, support among Malays - which also included Sabah and Sarawak bumiputera - for Harapan is 36 percent, and BN 35 percent.
Among Chinese and Indians, support for Harapan was at 53 percent and 42 percent respectively.
Support for BN was at 22 percent among Chinese respondents, and 42 percent among Indians.
Invoke derived the percentages from a question of who the respondents would vote for, which was then adjusted against their answers for six other questions to determine who they actually supported.
Invoke coordinator Rafizi Ramli said these additional questions were purposely biased against BN and PAS, to distinguish between those who supported the two parties and those who backed Harapan.
"Those who support Harapan will agree strongly, while those BN supporters will strongly disagree," he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
A total of 17,107 people responded to the Invoke survey conducted from June 5 to July 14.
The respondents comprised Malays (69 percent), Chinese (20 percent), Sabah and Sarawak bumiputera (6 percent) and Indians (5 percent).
According to Rafizi (photo), results from the 1,046 Sabah and Sarawak bumiputera respondents were totalled together with the 11,769 Malay respondents because the former were too diverse ethnically, and separating the result would give only insignificant percentages.
He also reasoned that the East Malaysian bumiputeras and Malays gave similar answers, although the former were more inclined to support BN.
Thus, if their answers were taken out, Rafizi said the percentage of Malay support for BN would be lower.
Meanwhile, Malay support for PAS was at 14 percent.
Support for PAS was weighed against a question on whether Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was using the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) to split the opposition.
Rafizi said those who support PAS would strongly disagree with this, believing that Act 355 was of utmost importance.
The number of undecided voters were Malays (15 percent), Chinese (23 percent) and Indians (10 percent).
Based on these findings, Rafizi said Harapan had a chance to beat BN at the 14th general election.
However, the PKR vice-president said winning the election, including garnering the support of the fence-sitters, would depend on Harapan addressing the economic concerns of the voters.
The survey found that bread-and-butter issues outweighed concerns over 1MDB, with cost of living, the economy, jobs and wages among the main issues weighing on voters' minds. - Mkini
