'JMPP 'went overboard' with Guan Eng buka puasa ban'

The Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Committee has advised Muslims and non-Muslims not to be confused by the kind of Islam propagated by NGO Jaringan Muslimin Pulau Pinang (JMPP).
Committee chair and state executive councillor Abdul Malik Kassim said preventing non-Muslims from attending buka puasa (breaking of fast) events with Muslims is “against true Islamic teachings”.
JMPP leader Hafiz Nordin had urged Muslims to bar Lim from attending buka puasa events this Ramadan during a rally speech last Friday at the Simpang Enam mosque near Komtar.
“This is simply going overboard, Penangites who love peace reject such extremist behaviour,” Malik said in response to the former state PAS youth chief's comment.
As a multicultural country, Malik observed that non-Muslims joined their Muslim brethren in solidarity during Ramadan.
“Such blessings can be upon anyone,” Malik said.
“Since 2008, Lim has attended buka puasa events with Muslims in Penang.
“Furthermore, financial aid for the state’s Islamic development has received motivation from the Chief Minister himself when he attends such events,” Malik added.

Several quarters have come out to condemn JMPP’s remark, which they deem as “extreme”.
Parti Amanah Negara's Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin said that JMPP did not cite any Islamic references which support the act of blocking Lim from attending buka puasa events with Muslims.
Hanipa urged Muslims not to be as “stupid or delusional” as Hafiz or JMPP.
Petaling Jaya think-tank Centre for a Better Tomorrow said asking the Penang CM to stay away from buka puasa events is “uncalled for and smacks of racial superiority”.- Mkini
