ALOR STAR – Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Asri Zainul Abidin today surrendered an unusual item to Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) to conduct a research on – a ‘jenglot’ (a deformed humanoid creature popular in Indonesian culture and mythology).
Asri, in his DrMAZA.com Facebook page today said he received the ‘jenglot’ as a gift several days ago.
“A lot of mythical and superstitious beliefs are linked to this ‘creature’. Those who are influenced by black magic and superstition are willing to spend a fortune to get hold of this ‘creature’.
“This morning, I have surrendered the ‘jenglot’ to UniMAP to carry out a scientific study. We hope they will uncover the truth behind the all these claims.
“Before this, USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia) had carried out a study on it. I hope UniMAP will come up with a more comprehensive report,” he said in the posting.
The ‘jenglot’ received by Asri was only several inches tall and has a long hair, a pair of fangs akin to a vampire, long claws on its fingers and toes. It came in a small black gift box.

Meanwhile, Asri also urged Muslims not to be easily deceived by superstitious beliefs and should instead only seek protection from Allah.
UniMAP vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal when contacted, confirmed that it has received the specimen from Asri for research.
He said Asri had personally contacted him asking for the specimen to be studied.
“We will analyse it using available expertise and technology at the university.
“The scientific study will focus on the content of the ‘jenglot’, such as whether it originated from a tree or other materials.” he said.
