Gov't blames opposition for higher restaurant food prices

The opposition is behind traders and restauranteurs who raise food prices, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor said today.
He said this is because those from opposition parties are now part of food traders associations, whose members collude to raise prices.
"In my opinion, the opposition is behind this. I know that when there is an association meeting (for food traders), those from DAP, PKR and the likes play a role to negate everything that the government is doing to ensure that the prices are corrected," Tengku Adnan said.
He told reporters this when met at carnival at the Seri Johor people's housing project in Kuala Lumpur today.
Tengku Adnan, who is also Umno secretary-general, also stressed that his remarks are not only directed towards Indian Muslim food traders.
This is to avoid misperceptions, given that he had earlier been accused of singling out Indian Muslim (mamak) food traders when he ticked off profiteering by restauranteurs when speaking at the Kongres India Muslim Malaysia (Kimma)
"Actually, it's not only mamak shops but also Malay, Chinese and Indian-owned shops.
"I just so happened to be speaking at a Kimma event, which was why I mentioned mamak shops. Why are the mamak traders angry at me? If they don't jack up prices, then they need not be angry," he said.
Gets WhatsApp messages on bills
He said he could prove that mamak restaurants also raise prices unreasonably, based on WhatsApp messages sent to him by the people revealing unreasonable bills.
"When they ask for the bill, a sum is shown on the calculator but when it bill is calculated again, a different sum is shown," he said.
On April 15, Tengku Adnan censured mamak restaurant operators for charging unreasonable prices for a glass of teh tarik and a single roti canai.

He was quoted as saying that although sugar subsidies have gone down by 34 sen per kilogramme, it was unreasonable to raise the prices of teh tarik by up to 50 sen per glass.
"Is a kilogramme of sugar used (in a glass of teh tarik)? Why? The same goes for flour and cooking oil. Why is the price of roti canai skyrocketing?" he asked during the Kimma annual general assembly.
He also urged all traders to display their prices and to provide receipts.
"I am asking the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry to monitor the price boards. It doesn't make sense to charge RM1.60 for a glass of water and RM3 for a plate of white rice," Tengku Adnan said.- Mkini
