Asri removes his controversial poem from Facebook

This is believed to be the result of numerous grouses about the poem, which the Perlis mufti says was intended against the Indian government.

PETALING JAYA: Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has taken down his controversial poem criticising “cow worshippers” from his official Facebook page named DrMaza.com.
The poem was posted on Friday and apparently criticised religious practices of Hindus and appeared to be defending an unnamed preacher from an “evil government”.
The mufti has defended his poem saying he would meet with the Indian community and explain the situation, possibly this week.
Asri explained on Facebook that the poem was directed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration for allegedly allowing the killing of Muslims over the slaughter of cows, which the Hindus consider sacred.
“For those who do not deify cows in this country like in India, there is no need to feel slighted. The poem was for current affairs in India,” Asri said on his Facebook page.
Many Facebook users have condemned the poem for its racist undertones and Hindu rights group Hindraf said it showed much influence Mumbai-based preacher Zakir Naik already had on Asri.
The mufti had in the past criticised Hindraf over its opposition to Naik, who is under investigation by the Indian authorities for money laundering and for promoting hatred and terrorism.
Hindraf leader P Waythamoorthy and other activists have initiated a legal suit against the government for allowing Naik to stay in the country, saying he was a threat to Malaysia’s national security.
Naik’s speeches have often touched on Christianity and Hinduism, and have been criticised for stoking hatred among those of different communities.
It was recently revealed that Naik was given permanent residence by the Malaysian government five years ago. -FMT
