Zaid: Neither Dr M nor Anwar can call the shots

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has dismissed the prospect of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad calling the shots in the opposition coalition.
This, he said, is because there is no one who could dictate things in the coalition.
“No one, not even Mahathir can dictate. Not (former opposition leader) Anwar (Ibrahim), not Mahathir, not anybody,” he told Malaysiakini.
According to Zaid, this is also the reason why Pakatan Harapan could not have PAS in its stable because the latter has a different idea of what constitutes a partnership.
“They have to dictate, they only know about Islam. Nowadays, without PAS, it is easier to have consensus,” said the former Umno and PKR member, who joined DAP last month.
Stressing that consensus would keep the opposition viable, Zaid therefore reiterated that nobody, including Mahathir, could impose his or her will.
“The problem we have is actually getting organised because the problem of getting organised in a formal way requires approval, that is the challenge,” he said.
Last week, Mahathir announced Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) plan to join Pakatan Harapan, but suggested that the coalition changes its name.
The Bersatu chairperson also recommended the creation of a common logo, symbol and election manifesto.
Yesterday, Harapan's presidential council accepted Bersatu as a member and agreed to register the coalition with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
Soon after Mahathir's announcement, a portal linked to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak accused the former premier of attempting to hijack Harapan.

However, Zaid believes Mahathir's recommendations would help bolster the opposition coalition's chances.
“I can't speak on behalf of the other parties but personally, it is a good idea that we can take on BN on the same platform Because the idea of contesting against BN under one name is important, it shows unity (and) commitment.
“The problem we have is that the name would probably require registration and the approval of the Registrar of Societies (ROS),” he said. -Mkini
