UK Parliament under attack, PM safe

Police are investigating a firearms incident near the British parliament in central London''s Westminster district.

"We are aware of reports of an incident at Westminster. We will put more information out as soon as we can," the Metropolitan Police said.

DPA cited a BBC report saying a police officer was attacked, adding that several incidents appeared to have taken place in the area.

The leader of the Commons, the lower house of parliament, said he was suspending business after a "serious incident" in which a police officer was stabbed and reports of other violent incidents.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that British Prime Minister Theresa May is safe after the incident. 

The spokesman for her office however, declined to say where May was when the attack took place. 

Reuters also reported that at least four people were spotted by their photographers, lying on the ground, some bleeding heavily and apparently unconscious, on Westminster Bridge near Britain's parliament. 

One of the photographs showed a body lying under the wheels of a London bus.
