MRCB snubs anti-incinerator petition

Activists from the "Kuala Lumpur Tak Nak Insinerator" (KTI) group today failed to submit a petition containing 12,000 signatures to Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB), protesting the Kepong incinerator project.
This was after MRCB, along with UEM Cenviro Sdn Bhd and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, were reported to have been shortlisted in the bid for the controversial incinerator project in Taman Beringin, Kepong.
When the protesters arrived at the MRCB headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, 10 activists from KTI were not allowed to enter the building. Instead, an official from MRCB was sent to speak to the group, outside the building.
Several police officers were also observed to be on guard outside.
The MRCB official, who refused to identify himself, declined to accept the petition and said: “I can’t take this (the petition). I don’t know anything (about the incinerator project), we’re not in the position to accept the petition, we don’t know, we don’t know anything.”
Despite pleas from the KTI activists, the officer went back into the building without accepting the petition.
“You can see here. He doesn’t even want to accept the petition, we have got nothing against the company (MRCB).
“We are here so that these (12,000 people who signed the petition) can have their voices heard,” KTI spokesperson Lam Choong Wah told reporters.
“Never mind if they don’t accept our petition, we’ll Pos Laju it to them,” he added, pointing towards the post office right beside MRCB’s office.
The activists said they will also submit similar petitions to UEM Cenviro and Alam Flora later today.
“If they too don’t accept our petition, we’ll Pos Laju it to them as well."
Lam said that results of the bidding for the incinerator project would be publicly known early next month.
If the project goes according to plan, the Kepong solid waste incinerator would be the biggest in the country, being able to handle 1,000 tonnes of garbage a day.
Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming had in the past, urged the government to fully disclose the project details and its agreement for the Kepong incinerator project to the public.
KTI has been actively opposing the project since it was announced, on grounds that it is bad for the environment.Lam later informed Malaysiakini that UEM Cenviro and Alam Flora have accepted KTI’s petition at their offices in Kuala Lumpur.

Cenviro’s senior manager, Surindra Mahendra, accepted the petition and has also invited the group to visit their plant in Sendayan.
On Alam flora's behalf, its group communications division head, Mahmood Abdul Razak, accepted the petition.
“KTI is greatly disappointed with MRCB’s irresponsible and cowardly behaviour,” Lam said.- Mkini
