NGO wants clampdown on spread of Wahhabism

Gabungan Angkatan Melayu Islam Nusantara (Amin) today urged the government to clamp down on Wahhabism, which it said is a threat to national security.
Its spokesperson Sheikh Abdul Kareem Said Khadaied said Wahhabism, a movement within the Sunni branch of Islam, is unsuitable to be practised in Malaysia and could lead to extremism.
"We want to protect the purity of our religion and urge religious authorities, who appear to still be confused over the matter, to heed this call which comes from the grassroots and is based on knowlege, facts, history, the Quran and hadith," he told a press conference today.
Abdul Kareem said Amin plans to meet with representatives from the mufti departments and religious authorities to discuss the matter.
It will also send a memorandum to the Home Ministry and state Islamic affairs departments to ban the books written by Ibu Taimiyyah and Muhammad Abdul Wahab, whom he said propagate wahabbi teachings.
Wahhabism is often described as ultra-conservative, puritanical and literalist.
Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Abdul Kareem also urged Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin to steer clear of propagating Wahhabi teachings.

Asri has been accused of propagating Wahhabism in Perlis.
"We urge the Perlis mufti to respect other muftis on this matter. Don't try to push his views outside of Perlis. We would not interfere if your sultan allows it, then it is your right to propagate in Perlis.
"But we Malays must respect all sultans... so he must respect the beliefs of other sultans," he said.
Malaysiakini is contacting Asri for comment.
Amin consists of 105 NGOs, including Aswaja, Pertubuhan Tarekat Muktabar Malaysia (Pertama), Veteran Umno, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma), Pertubuhan Ilmuan Sunni Malaysia (Sunni) dan Kumpulan Rabitah. -Mkini
