PETALING JAYA: Was the vehicle which plunged into a 12-metre-deep sewer under construction in Jalan Universiti, Section 17 here, yesterday speeding?
A source in the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) told FMT that eyewitnesses to the accident had told its officers that the car was speeding before ramming into the plastic safety barriers surrounding the sewer under construction.
The project is an Indah Water Konsortium project and the MBPJ source said the project’s main contractor, Mangkubumi Sdn Bhd, had adhered to the council’s safety requirements in relation to having adequate barriers and notices.
“Aside from the plastic barriers, there were also concrete barriers.
“Anyway, we have issued a stop-work order for the contractor to enhance safety measures.
“More signages will be added to alert road users and more barriers may also be put in place.”
The source said the stop-work order would only be lifted once MBPJ was satisfied with the additional safety measures.
Yesterday, it was reported that two people were hurt after their car plunged into the 12-metre-deep sewer.
The victims were extricated by Fire and Rescue Department personnel and were later sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre for treatment for multiple injuries. A crane was used to remove the car from the deep hole.
