Form Two student drowns after falling into ditch

A Form Two student was found drowned after slipping into a ditch while attempting to cross it on his way home from school, in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Baru, yesterday evening.
Johor Baru South police chief ACP Sulaiman Salleh said in the 6.40pm incident, the victim, Mohamad Amirul Rashid Mohamad Mokhtar, had just completed the afternoon school session, and was heading home with his twin brother, Mohamad Abdul Amin, and another friend.
"The victim, who was the first one who attempted to cross the drain, suddenly slipped and fell into a 0.3 metre-deep ditch, and he was swept away by the strong currents.
"It had just finished raining heavily at the time, causing the water to fill the ditch up to the brim," Sulaiman said in a statement today.
He said Mohamad Amirul's body was later found floating in a pool of water by members of the public, about 70 metres from the scene.
The case had been classified as sudden death, and the body was sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) in Johor Baru for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the victim's father, Mohamad Mokhtar Mohamad Kepol, 44, who was met by reporters at the HSI morgue said the family had been hit by another tragedy, as his first child had died in 2002, in an accident.

"It's difficult to express (how we feel), because we lost our first Mohamad Fitri Aziz after he was hit by a motorcycle, also while he was returning home from school," he said.
Mohd Mokhtar said he was informed of the incident by his daughter at around 8.30pm, while he was on duty at the Johan Cruyff Futsal Court Iskandar in Kampung Melayu.
"I work as a security guard, and I only return home once a week. However, we (he and the victim) were close. He was a good child, although a little quiet," he said.
