Number of female drug addicts on the rise, says Nada

National Anti-Drug Agency says prostitution, marital problems and peer pressure among the main contributors to the trend.
Suhaimi-AbdullahPETALING JAYA: The number of women now addicted to drugs has risen to a worrying level, says the National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada).
According to a report by the New Straits Times, the agency’s director-general Suhaimi Abdullah said the number of female drug addicts had gone up from 627 in 2014 to 783 last year.
He was speaking at an event in Seremban yesterday where he also said that while drug abuse was caused by a variety of factors, topping the chart was prostitution. “The majority of women involved in drugs are sex workers.”
Other factors, he added, include marital problems, peer pressure and the influence of partners.
“We are going all out to tackle this problem through Nada’s prevention and treatment programme.
“We have special programmes for women addicts at rehabilitation centres, including religious, cooking and hairdressing classes, as well as programmes to prepare them for the outside world,” said Suhaimi.
At present, there is only one women’s rehabilitation centre in the country located in Bachok, Kelantan and a service centre for female drug addicts in Port Dickson.
Also present at the event was Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Mohamad Hasan, who expressed the state government’s commitment to combat drug abuse. This, he said, was exemplified through a pilot project in Kampung Sungai Buloh, Jelebu.
“We launched the pilot project last year, and the module and programmes were fruitful. So we will implement the formula in other areas that need urgent attention.”
The daily also reported him as saying that the state government was aiming for Negeri Sembilan to be drug-free by 2020.
“We believe the participation of society is crucial to help the authorities tackle this problem. Families and communities play important roles in the fight against drugs.
“We will also engage mosques and village committees to combat this problem.”
