PSM: Arrest Najib, Mustapa for sedition over TPPA

PSM wants Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed to be investigated under the Sedition Act over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.
Its Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj said the duo's actions in negotiating the TPPA insults the judiciary.
"The handling of clauses on industry state dispute between foreign investors and the country makes it seem that Mustapa and his team of negotiators are saying that the Malaysian judiciary is not competent enough to disputes brought by foreign investors.
"This is an insult to the judiciary," he told reporters after lodging a report against the duo at the Sentul district police headquarters today.
The TPPA negotiations concluded in October with the full text to be tabled in Parliament for the vote.
Jeyakumar said it is reasonable to cite the duo for sedition, given that former PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan was charged with sedition for saying the judiciary has unfairly judge PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Najib and Mustapa are worse, he said, because the TPPA could affect the country's soverignity, he said.
He added foreign investors should first bring their disputes to the Malaysian court, and to international arbitration if need be.
"The International Tribunal has jugdes which are far more experienced, who are also from three TPPA countries," he said.
Civil society is opposed to TPPA, saying it encourages internet censorship and jeopardises data protection.
There are also concerns that intellectual property protection could lead to pricier medicine.
However, United States President Barack Obama said the TPPA balances patent rights with public access to low-priced generic medicine.
He also said that cutting tariffs on medicine imports will bring prices down on the long run, but Malaysia now has no tariff on medicines. -Mkini
