KUALA LUMPUR - Matthias Chang, the lawyer representing former Umno leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, was today questioned for nearly two hours on his alleged involvement in the series of complaints lodged by his client here and abroad on the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversy.
Chang’s lawyer Ahmad Bazlan Che Kassim told reporters that police questioned his client as a witness under Section 203(A) of the Penal Code for disclosing information in the performance of his duties.
"We arrived today to give a statement to the police likely in relation to Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, under Section 203(A) of the Penal Code and questioning started at 10.30am," he said outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this afternoon.
When asked if Matthias felt the questioning was a form of harassment, Ahmad Bazlan said, "No."
"From day one, he was willing to cooperate with the police and will come back if needed," he added.
Chang was called in to record a statement here on Monday in relation to Khairuddin, who was formerly the Batu Kawan Umno deputy division chief.
Khairuddin is currently being held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 following a global tour to solicit investigations by other countries into 1MDB, after US-based business daily Wall Street Journal published a series of reports detailing dubious activity allegedly involving the state-owned firm.
Khairuddin had also lodged reports locally against 1MDB late last year, reportedly because criticisms against the state-fund were “ignored” at the time.
His reports are believed to have prompted investigations into 1MDB in Switzerland, the SAR of Hong Kong, the US and the UK.
The former Umno man is currently challenging his SOSMA detention. - Malay mail
