Kadir: Khir Toyo can’t claim ‘innocence’ after guilty verdict

The veteran newsman did caution Khir Toyo to be careful and reminded him that the Selangor Menteri Besar’s post was "cursed".

KUALA LUMPUR: A former veteran newsman pointed out in his latest blog posting that although jailed former Selangor Menteri Besar Khir Toyo has denied wrongdoing on the corruption change which landed him behind bars, it really doesn’t matter now as far as the law and the Court was concerned. “It was proven beyond reasonable doubt in Court, by the prosecutor, that Khir Toyo was guilty as charged.”
“He’s the second Selangor Menteri Besar to be jailed for corruption.”
New Straits Times Group Editor Kadir Jasin disclosed that he did interview Khir Toyo once when he was then at the height of his power. “His staff and he felt that I was being too critical of him but there were already many signs then that the people were not happy with him for various reasons.”
“I did caution him to be careful and reminded him that the Selangor Menteri Besar’s post was ‘cursed’.”
Again, he reiterated, Khir Toyo’s defence had only to raise “reasonable doubt” to be freed of the charge but failed to do so.
So, added Kadir, it’s no use Khir Toyo claiming to be innocent after the Court had already found him guilty. “Although Khir Toyo swore that he was not wrong, the fact is that his defence lawyer failed to raise reasonable doubt.”
Khir Toyo, continued Kadir, was in fact nobody when he became Menteri Besar. “No one knew him when he was appointed to the post out of the blue in 2000. This shows that even good people, keeping a low profile, can become careless and swollen-headed when they get into power.”
The lesson that emerges from Khir Toyo’s case, said Kadir, is that no one is above the law and that politicians can be investigated, and if found guilty under the law, can be sent to jail. “The case has ramifications especially in the light of investigations elsewhere on 1MDB involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, decorated by the Bugis in Sulawesi as Datuk Seri Mappadulung Daeng Mattimung Karaeng Sanrobone.”
There are parallels between Khir Toyo’s case and that involving Najib, said the former veteran newsman. “The excuse is that it’s political and that the people didn’t lose anything. Khir Toyo’s jailing will increase pressure on Najib on the two major scandals affecting his administration including 1MDB.”
“Unlike Khir Toyo who has denied wrongdoing, Najib has chosen to remain silent on the issue of RM2.6 billion entering his personal banking accounts. His supporters like to believe that the money was a donation from a mysterious Arab donor.”
Already, said Kadir, Najib’s lawyers are still dilly-dallying over whether to sue the Wall Street Journal for running a report on Friday 3 July that nearly USD700 million (RM2.6 billion) entered his personal banking accounts with AmBank Islamic private banking services before the last General Election in 2013.
