Malay people urged to regain their dignity by acting with courage against 'a scary leadership.'

KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged voters in Pekan not to vote for their MP, prime minister Najib Razak, at the next general election.
Speaking at a high-tea event in Ampang here, the former prime minister suggested the idea as a way to get Najib to step down. Dr Mahathir has led a yearlong campaign to force Najib out of office.
“Can we have a pact, go to Pekan, tell them (voters) ‘please this guy is a thief’, get them not to vote for him,” he said. “Just don’t vote for him. In Pekan, don’t vote.”
Dr Mahathir said Malay people should learn to think about their self-interest, and learn from Malaysian Chinese in this regard.
“We Malays are not very smart because we don’t think about our own benefit,” he said. “The Chinese on the other hand, if their interests are threatened, they will forget about their party,” he said.
He said the purpose of defeating Najib was not to let Umno suffer but merely to get Najib to step down. “Umno is not wrong. Najib is wrong. We can still fix Umno,” he said. However, Umno members must be courageous enough to stand up to leaders in whom they no longer had confidence in.
Dr Mahathir said the Malays were previously very brave in fighting against the British and the Malayan Union proposal because “the Malays realised at that time that they were about to lose their Tanah Melayu.”
He urged the Malay people to regain their dignity by exhibiting courage. “Those who are afraid have no dignity. Only those who are brave have dignity. If we want to redeem our dignity, we have to be brave.”
People were now afraid because they lived under “a scary leadership,” he said.
He urged all Umno divisions to call on Najib to step down. “If all divisions asked him to step down, even a deaf person would hear it. I am saying this clearly that I want Najib to step down. We have to be brave, but yes, of course there will always be a risk.”
