ZAHID HIMSELF WANTS TO TOPPLE NAJIB: Watch out, 'SD' conspiracy a devious ploy - Mahfuz warns
PETALING JAYA - The Deputy Prime Minister's claim of a plot to topple the Government is Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's plan all along, says Datuk Mahfuz Omar.
The PAS information chief believes this to be the case as he had no knowledge of any statutory declaration being prepared to topple the Government.
He is shocked to hear of Dr Ahmad Zahid's allegation.
"I can say that a lot of us in the Opposition are equally shocked," he said.
"I believe that this is a self-created issue by Zahid himself," he added.
"I believe he (Dr Ahmad Zahid) has purposely made this up to send a signal to the party leadership that Umno and Barisan Nasional can lose its position if Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak remains as Prime Minister."
Dr Ahmad Zahid was aware of how much Najib's position as the Prime Minister now depended on his (Zahid's) own actions, Mahfuz said.
"If Zahid leaves this matter alone now, he will never be able to surpass Najib and take over as premier," said Mahfuz. "He also cannot wait until the next general election, so this could be his attempt."
Meanwhile, Opposition lawmakers say wanting to oust a prime minister should not be treated as a crime because it is a part of parliamentary democracy.
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said it was time that Dr Ahmad Zahid as well as Umno learnt "the true precepts and principles of parliamentary democracy".

"There is nothing criminal, illegal or undemocratic if a new majority of MPs feel that there should be a change of prime minister and government by peaceful, democratic and constitutional means, including the use of statutory declarations.
"Zahid is warning about the attempt to topple as if it is some heinous crime when this should be accepted as an integral process of parliamentary democracy, provided there is a new majority in Parliament that supports it," Lim said.
He added that the toppling cannot fall under the ambit of Section 124B of the Penal Code on "activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy" unless the proposed toppling was by "violent and unconstitutional means".
PKR vice-president Tian Chua said Dr Ahmad Zahid was confused and "dramatising it out of his own fear".
"He is confused between the people who are against the Government and those who are against the Prime Minister.
"Every Member of Parliament has the right to opt for a vote of no confidence against the PM because that is how democracy works," said Chua.
"So, there is no conspiracy or plot as he mentioned," he said.
He said it was also unnecessary for someone to require a statutory declaration to garner support from PKR because "we have always been clear on our stand". - Asiaone
