A woman set fire to herself yesterday at Bangsar South office complex, sustaining 50% burns to her body, after trying to drive her Perodua Viva through the office complex on Jalan Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur.
In the incident at 5.03pm, which went viral after a video was posted on Sukan Star TV’s Facebook page, the 35-year-old woman was said to have self-immolated because she was feeling depressed after being retrenched last year.
“The woman used a lighter to set fire to her dress shortly after ramming the stairs at the main door of the building,” said Brickfields OCPD, ACP Sharul Othman Mansor.
He said the woman – who was previously working in the information technology research division and undergoing psychiatric treatment – was believed to have tried to ram the car into the building because she was unhappy over her dismissal and was going through a court trial for a civil offence.
“The victim is in critical condition and is now undergoing treatment at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre,” he said.
Sharul said forensic examination by the Fire and Rescue Department found three bottles filled with petrol, a gas cylinder and two boxes of fire crackers in the victim’s car.
The disturbing three-minute video shows passers-by and security guards trying to reason with the woman, before she got back into her car and it exploded. Security guards then immediately rushed forward with fire extinguishers to put out the blaze. – Bernama
