GEORGE TOWN: Six cars parked beside a controversial condominium building site were damaged when wet concrete mixture spilled on to them yesterday.
The site was formerly a car park in Jalan Moulmein, adjacent to the market in the middle-class village of Pulau Tikus, and sparked controversy for receiving building approval for a high-density high-rise project within a neighbourhood of mainly terrace houses and bungalows.
Three cars, a Honda City, Proton Iswara and Perodua Axia, were dented and their windscreens shattered.
A witness named Teh said he was standing not far from the site when he heard the sound of glass shattering from the direction of the building, Bernama reported.
“I was shocked by the sound as I saw several people rushing towards the area, he said. “Cement mixture had spilled on the cars parked below but fortunately, no one was hurt.”
The owner of the Honda City, Ong, in his 50’s, said he was shocked when he heard a noise coming from the construction site, about 10 minutes after alighting from his vehicle.
“I returned with my daughter and grandson to see what had happened and was shocked to see my car completely covered with wet concrete cement, and the windows shattered,” he said.
Police said the affected car owners had made reports and the developer’s representative would be called in to facilitate investigations. “A manager of the construction site explained what happened and took full responsibility, as well as agreed to pay compensation to the owners of the cars,” a police spokesman said, Bernama reported.
