KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Najib Razak must resign immediately as both Prime Minister and Umno president in order to restore public confidence towards the ruling Malay party, an Umno Youth division has said.
According to an emergency motion tabled and passed by the Tampin Youth division last night, issues such as the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and the RM2.6 billion bank donation have affected Najib and by extension, the party’s credibility.
Malay daily Sinar Harian reported that the motion was tabled during the youth wing division’s meeting yesterday by Kampung Ulu Ladang Umno Youth delegate Azman Abdullah, and was seconded by more than 200 other attendees.
The motion states: “For Malays, Islam and Malaysia, we ask that Datuk Seri Najib Razak resign as Prime Minister and Umno president in order to restore the confidence, love and support of the Malay and Bumiputra people towards Umno to ensure that we Malays as owners of this country shall remain in power.”
Azman was quoted saying that the motion was brought up as many issues involving PM Najib were affecting Umno’s image.
Discontent appears to be brewing within Umno in at least three states: Johor, Sabah and Kedah since the removal of Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal from Cabinet following their vocal criticism of the government’s handling of 1MDB. - Malay mail
