KOTA KINABALU: Umno Vice President and Umno Sabah Founder Shafie Apdal, who was sacked last Tuesday as Rural and Regional Development Minister, has no plans to return to Usno, the party that paved the way for Umno to come to Sabah. “It’s a lie being spread by some people after I was dropped from the Federal Cabinet.”
“I am the founder of Umno Sabah,” reminded Shafie who numbers the late freedom fighter Nelson Mandela of South Africa and former Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi among his heroes. “I have no problems remaining with the party. My Umno will not fade away. I have been loyal to the party since it spread its wings to Sabah in 1991.”
“It was not easy to set up Umno in Sabah. We had to go through many challenges and hurdles to set up the chapter in the state.”
Shafie was explaining to the local media his remarks at a meet-the-people session on Monday in Semporna after his abrupt exclusion from the Cabinet last Tuesday. “We can accept reprimands and criticism but we cannot be Yes men. It would be strange if I am stopped from attending party meetings.”
Shafie conceded that there are many people who wanted to quit Umno and return to Usno following what they saw as him being humiliated by being unceremoniously dumped from the Cabinet although he was a party vice president. “I told them to stay with the party because although I am no longer in the Cabinet, I am still a party vice president.”
“The focus should be on uniting the people and working for them. All must remain loyal to the party and continue their struggle for the people.”
Shafie, continuing, said that a leader must have principles. “He must do the right things. The party institution is important and not positions. We respect the president, so why should we not respect the deputy president and the Supreme Council members?”
There’s no love lost between Shafie and Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman who has indirectly been under pressure from the former and his allies viz Communication and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Haji Mulia to step down. Musa however has thrown his support behind Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Musa was also instrumental in Pandikar being made Speaker, and appointing Salleh as Sabah Speaker. However, his “peace” gestures have not been reciprocated by his three most formidable foes in Umno Sabah.
