Sabah CM: ‘Distortions’ on 20-point pact must be cleared

Musa Aman says public forums on the issue are needed because too much misinformation and embellishment exist presently.

KOTA KINABALU: Public forums that openly address the 20-point Malaysia agreement are sorely needed to quash the many historical distortions that presently exist, said Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.
In a speech, that was read by his deputy Raymond Tan Shu Kiah at a forum in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) yesterday, Musa said, “As we all know, there is so much disinformation in cyberspace and the 20-point topic is not spared from historical distortions and embellishments.
“Thus having a public forum to bring clarity to this subject is commendable,” The Star Online reported him as saying.
Musa said there was a need for academics, social scientists and those privy to the issue to come together to clear the air about the much-debated 20-point agreement.
He acknowledged that there was bound to be conflicting viewpoints and sentiments but maintained that through a “transparent and intellectual discussion” conducted in a civilised manner, feasible solutions could be found.
“We do not want any party to politicise the 20 points with some even provoking communities into disobedience,” he said as this would only result in unwanted instability in the country.
Echoing his sentiments was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri who said the 20-point Malaysia agreement was close to the hearts of Sabahans and that public forums would help educate the people, in particular the youth about what the agreement entailed.
“We have to face issues that people have been talking about and address questions that people want answers for,” she said, adding that laws had to be changed to stay relevant to changing times and needs.
