Rep: Umno using DEIG to divert attention from 1MDB

Members of the public should not allow the Darul Ehsan Investment Group (DEIG) issue to distract them from 1MDB, Semambu assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung says.
While stressing that any public policy should be subject to scrutiny, he warned that Umno was attempting to capitalise on the DEIG issue to divert attention.
"I think this is an attempt to distract public attention from 1MDB, which is clearly a big scandal.
"Any best plan is also subject to accountability. I am sure that everyone is watching, but don't be confused by Umno's tactic of sowing confusion and diverting attention," Lee told reporters at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.
He also pointed out that DEIG is 'very different' from 1MDB, because 1MDB has borrowed billions of ringgit to finance its investments whereas DEIG is meant to consolidate the activities of the Selangor's government-linked companies (GLC).
The DEIG issue erupted last week when the Selangor Select Committee on Government Agencies, Statutory Bodies and State Subsidiary Companies (JP-Abas) highlighted concerns over governance issues and the lack of check-and-balance in the company, which is slated to begin operations in 2016.
It recommended that all of DEIG’s activities should be suspended pending a white paper from the Selangor state government to explain and justify the company’s role to the state assembly.
When tabled in the state assembly on Wednesday last week, it triggered a lively debate from both sides of the political divide following which Menteri Besar Mohd Azmin Ali vowed that all of DEIG’s issues would be resolved before it starts operations.
Same issues in Pahang
Lee (photo) lauded the conduct of the Selangor state assembly, saying that it shows that the Selangor government is open to scrutiny and is quick to respond to queries from assemblypersons.
He lamented that, in contrast, many questions in the Pahang state assembly where he sits remain unanswered and he was even slapped with a year-long suspension.
“And now GLCs in Pahang are facing he same issues (as Selangor), where without consolidation, a little here; a little there, it is very fragmented and could not generate revenue for Pahang,” he revealed.
