Prove it if you met the RM2.6 billion donor, Dr Mahathir tells Zahid

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claims he met with the Middle Eastern family who donated Rm2.6 billion into the accounts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, August 26, 2015.
Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi must prove that the Middle Eastern donor who gave RM2.6 billion to Datuk Seri Najib Razak had huge sums of money to give away to Malaysia and other countries, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He urged the deputy prime minister to reveal the source of the money, the nature of the donor's business and his bank details.
"Zahid says he has seen the Arab who gave the money. Then let him give proof that this Arab has huge sums of money to give away to Malaysia and many other countries. Which countries?
"Show his account in the bank, the cheques he issued, particularly the US$700 million, and the recipient bank should be holding these cheques," Dr Mahathir said in a blog posting today.
He said that this information could have been verified by the original task force but added that Najib had dismantled the unit by sacking Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail as attorney-general, sending the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief on leave and accusing the central bank of leaking government secrets.
"Now MACC is said to be still investigating the RM2.6 billion.
"It is an emasculated MACC. If Najib is serious about investigating his RM2.6 billion in Ambank, he should reconstitute the original tasks force.
"A new task force filled with his people has no credibility," Dr Mahathir wrote.
The retired statesman added that the public had a right to know the details as they were not convinced that the money was a personal gift to Najib to win the elections.
Zahid said on Saturday that he had personally met representatives of the Middle Eastern "family" who donated theRM2.6 billion to Najib.
He said that they told him the donation was to ensure Barisan Nasional and Umno won the 13th general election.
He also said they were helping Barisan because of the government's commitment to counter terrorism and maintain Malaysia's status as a Sunni country.
Najib has been under pressure over the RM2.6 billion donation after it was first reported as an inflow of funds to his personal bank accounts by The Wall Street Journal on July 2.
The money was confirmed as a donation by MACC early this month, prompting questions by critics as to why Najib had not disclosed this earlier.
