Police put the boot into people’s power

Police must obey the law when enforcing the law, but at Tangkap Najib rally, they did the opposite

Do you know what tyranny looks like? Do you know what tyranny feels like?
Those who protested Saturday, calling for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s arrest, experienced tyranny, when the police manhandled them with brute force and robbed them off their right to voice their opinion and dissatisfaction with the government.
My aide, Jay Jay Dennis, told me he was detained and badly beaten. In a text message, he said four police officers kicked him on his lower back when he was face down on the road.
This is a flagrant abuse of power and excessive use of force.
An American judge, Earl Warren, said the police must obey the law when enforcing the law. The police at the Tangkap Najib rally did exactly the opposite.
They launched a preemptive strike even before the rally began and arrested rally organizers, Adam Adli and Mandeep Singh, in an overnight sweep.
Malaysia is a functioning democracy and that means the police and government must allow for the freedom of expression and assembly. Abusing police powers to violently nab protesters goes against the very grain of democracy.
When you have police officers who abuse citizens, you erode public confidence in law enforcement. A large segment of the Malaysian society do not trust the police.
The young people took to the streets to demand that the police arrest Najib as he is yet to come clean about 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
No one, including Najib, has denied any allegations. But everyone who was critical of Najib has been harassed by the police. Whistleblowers have come to bear the brunt of the government’s wrath. Najib, who has been at the centre of this financial scandal, is a free man.
The police have instead come up with a theory about conspirators working to topple Najib.
The witch hunt for these saboteurs began Friday, when the rally planners were nabbed by the police. This is just the beginning. The government will use its police force to clamp down hard on the Opposition politicians, human rights activists, student leaders and members of the civil society.
This travesty of justice will be carried out in the name of public order. Our rights are clearly being trampled upon by a government and a Prime Minister afraid of losing power. We are held hostage by a government and a Prime Minister terrified of peoples’ power.
As former US President John F Kennedy said, the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.
