People’s attitude to blame for BN’s hold on power, says Mat Sabu

It is the attitude of the people that has kept Barisan Nasional in government despite scandal after scandal, said New Hope Movement (GHB) pro tem chairman Mohamad Sabu.

"Why did 1MDB happen? Why is there a RM2.6 billion donation? That is just one account that we know of. There could be more.
Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, provided a list of scandals that had hit Malaysia over the years: the multi-billion ringgit Bumiputera Malaysia Finance (BMF) scandal in the 1980s, the Pewaja Steel scandal that recorded estimated losses of almost RM10 billion and the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) affair just a few years ago which cost the government RM12.5 billion.
He said the opposition had gone everywhere talking about the scandals to the people, but come general election, BN retained its control of the federal government.
He said the attitude of Malaysians made it possible for those in power to take advantage of the situation, believing that the people would keep voting BN.
"So we now have 1MDB, in which even (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has asked where the money (RM42 billion in debts) went.
"One should not try to bluff Mahathir... He is experienced so if he is interfering, it means something is off. After all, he has 22 years of experience as the PM," he said.
Mat Sabu also spoke of The Wall Street Journal's recent expose on the RM2.6 billion deposited into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal accounts and probed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
He said the events that followed the probe, which saw the police investigating MACC for alleged leaks, was like a Hindustani film, and poked fun at a PAS leader who had remarked that it was illogical that Najib would use his personal accounts to receive the money.
He said in another country, the people would have their government leaders resign and face the music but not in Malaysia.
"It is the people's fault because they believe if Umno fell, the Chinese will rule Malaysia. What will happen to the Malays then?"
Mat Sabu added that even though Penang was held by DAP, a predominately Chinese party, together with PKR, he supported the administration because of its integrity and performance.
He also said that the opposition parties needed a new pact to face BN in the next polls because collaboration was the only way for them to take over Putrajaya, judging from the encouraging results of the last two general elections.
"This is why we must have a new coalition with PAS gone. If PAS makes friends with Umno now, then out you go," he said.
Mat Sabu is helming GHB, a PAS splinter group of progressive leaders and their supporters from various civil society groups. GHB is currently working to set up a new political party to join PKR and DAP.
