NAJIB WAVES THE WHITE FLAG: ‘Umno won’t ignore calls to hold party polls as scheduled’ - sycophant Ismail Sabri
KULAIJAYA - Umno will not brush aside any calls from the grassroots for the party to cancel its decision to postpone its election for 18 months.
Supreme council member Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said a few divisions, including from the Youth wing, have passed motions asking the party not to delay its election, scheduled for next year.
Ismail said the main reason the supreme council had postponed the party’s election was to allow it to focus on preparing for the 14th general election.
“We want Umno members at all levels to unite as one when facing the general election.
“The supreme council believes that if the party holds its election before the general election, it would create rifts within Umno and affect Barisan Nasional’s preparation for the general election,” he said at the Kulai Umno division meeting yesterday, which was opened by party vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
He said all motions that had been passed by the divisions, including those calling for the party election to be held as scheduled, would be looked into.
Umno, which conducts polls once in three years, last held its election in October 2013 under a new format that allows more members to vote for the party leadership compared with the previous method, where only delegates attending the general assembly could vote.
In Jitra, another supreme council member, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, also called for the party election to be held next year.
“The situation is tense now. Let members decide if we in the party leadership are still qualified and deserve to continue holding positions. We must let members decide if they want minor or major changes.
“I am saying this because I love Umno and the general election is coming soon,” he said during the opening of the Jerlun Umno division meeting yesterday. - ANN
