Najib said that as Umno president, he was involved in raising funds for the party and everything he did was for the party's interests.
These funds enabled Umno to carry out corporate social responsibility work, he added when giving a speech to open the Bandar Tun Razak Umno division meeting today.
"As party president, whatever I do be it raising funds for the party or other matters, it is solely for the interest of the party. It is not for other purposes," he was also reported saying.
Najib, who is also prime minister, is under fire for receiving US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) in his personal accounts from entities linked to debt-ridden state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had said the funds were political donations that came from a Middle Eastern donor, denying it came from 1MDB.
Najib's supporters in Umno have also been speaking, blogging and going on television to explain that there was nothing wrong with receiving political donations, and that the party president was allowed to hold such funds in trust on behalf of Umno.
The largest portion of the funds, US$681 million, was said to have been transferred a little more than a month before the general elections in May 2013. This was first reported by The Wall Street Journal last month, citing documents from Malaysian investigators.
In his speech today to the Umno division, Najib also said that the MACC had cleared him of corruption over the RM2.6 billion in his accounts by confirming that it had come from a donor.
After WSJ first reported its allegations last month, Najib denied taking funds from 1MDB for personal gain, but did not directly address the fund transfers.
MACC has not revealed the donor's identity and said it would be asking Najib to provide an explanation on the donation.
