NAJIB MOST DISHONEST PM: Twitter users doubt RM2.6bil was a donation - survey

NAJIB MOST DISHONEST PM: Twitter users doubt RM2.6bil was a donation - survey
KUALA LUMPUR - Twitter users were largely unconvinced that the RM2.6 billion deposited into Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s accounts was a donation, according to a survey by Politweet.
Instead, they viewed the amount to be linked to state-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The pollster noted that Najib and the state investment firm’s supporters lacked influence on the social networking site and consequently were unable to use official Twitter accounts to convince people of their side of the story.
“‘Donations’ did not serve as an effective explanation for the sum of money,” said Politweet in its study that looked at tweets about donations and Najib from August 3 to August 6, after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) issued a statement saying the RM2.6 billion came from donors and not from 1MDB.
“A hashtag campaign called #DearNajib was started, drawing even more jokes and sarcasm from users online. From August 3rd – August 7th, 28,034 users tweeted 57,959 tweets with the hashtag #DearNajib,” the pollster added in its report sent to Malay Mail Online recently.
Politweet said it found Twitter users who remain convinced the amount was misappropriated, even though this belief has been unsubstantiated.
US-based daily The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the paper that had first reported about the money in the Prime Minister and Umno president’s bank accounts had cited documents from a government investigation and claimed that almost US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was moved around companies linked to 1MDB before the money ended up in Najib’s personal bank accounts two months before the 13th general election in May 2013.
PM Najib
WSJ had said the original source of the money was “unclear”.
“The original WSJ and Sarawak Report articles did not clearly state that the USD681 million came from 1MDB, but that is the message that spread online,” said Politweet.
“This may have been caused by misunderstandings on the part of the media and the users,” the organisation said when pointing out that the initial article mentioned that the funds were moved by firms linked to 1MDB, and not that these came from the firm.
The pollster said the phrase “linked to 1MDB” could be misinterpreted as “flowed from” 1MDB, especially when readers viewed the WSJ’s graphic showing the flow of funds from former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International to Najib.
Politweet said Najib’s statement that he had never taken public funds for personal gain was unclear and evasive due to its phrasing.
“Some users took this as an admission of guilt while others took this to mean he denied funds were deposited into his account,” said the pollster. - Malay Mail
