The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking for a Facebook account holder who goes by the name of Sharifah Sofia Syed Rashid to help in the investigation into the dissemination of yet-to-be-verified information.
MCMC Monitoring and Enforcement Division chief Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said today an analysis showed that the owner of the account was suspected to have been using the name of Sharifah and Captain Sharifah for the same purpose.
He said the information disseminated on the FB account was not only false but could jeopardise public order.
"The MCMC requests any social media user who has information on the FB account holder to come forward and assist in the investigation," he said in a statement.
Zulkarnain said anyone disseminating false information on social media could be penalised under Section 211 or 233 or the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He also said that social media users who found that their account had been abused to open false accounts should report the matter to FB and MCMC.
Such a report was necessary so that the false account could be closed," he added. – Bernama
