Shukri was surrounded by at least six bodyguards in uniform and plain-clothed officers from the Malaysia Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) as he walked past the media who had been waiting since 8pm to interview him upon his arrival from a 10-day working visit to the United States.
The deputy commissioner in charge of operations declined to give a press conference, telling the media he would instead speak later as the situation was "not safe".
"Thank you for coming. I will see you guys later... it is not safe… There's so many things I need to settle first," he said.
Shukri arrived at 9.40pm and was met by MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Datuk Mustafar Ali and minister in charge of governance and integrity Datuk Paul Low at the VIP lounge in KLIA. The three spent about 10 minutes talking.
Shukri returns to Malaysia amid uncertainty over the state of affairs at the anti-graft agency, which has had seven of its officers questioned by police over alleged leaks of official information on a probe into debt-ridden state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Police are investigating the leak of such information as well as of a purported draft charge sheet against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak which was published on whistleblower site Sarawak Report.
MACC was also in the midst of probing SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.
The anti-graft agency is also without its chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, who is on medical leave following a surgery. Mustafar is currently the acting chief commissioner.
Two of Shukri's men from the agency's special operations division that had been investigating SRC International, were abruptly transferred out on Friday, and are to begin new postings at the Prime Minister's Department tomorrow.
Shukri on Friday had asked Putrajaya to retract the transfer order of the two senior officers and had offered himself for transfer instead. He said the officers were only carrying out his instructions.
This prompted a rumour that Shukri would likely be transferred out for speaking up against the administration.
The two transferred were MACC director (special operations) Datuk Bahri Mohamad Zin and MACC director of strategic communications Datuk Rohaizad Yaakob.
Bahri had called the questioning of MACC officers as well as the police raids conducted on the special operations unit's offices "mad", and had denied that the leaks came from within the agency.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police would temporarily postpone their probe into the commission on the alleged leaks so as to avoid negative public perception.
Khalid also defended the police, saying they never intended to interfere in any investigations, let alone target any particular institution, especially the MACC.
Besides the seven anti-graft officers, a former member of an external MACC advisory panel and an officer of the Attorney-General's Chambers were also questioned over the alleged leaks of official information, prompting public outcry of an attempted cover up of financial wrongdoing in 1MDB.
Several quarters, including individuals from within the administration and ruling party Umno, have criticised the police for their actions against the MACC. Public support for the agency has also poured in with people demanding that anti-graft investigators be allowed to carry out their duties free from harassment and intimidation.
