Khairy slammed for defending Najib

GHB's Faiz says PM could be charged for graft even if the RM2.6 billion was a donation.

PETALING JAYA: Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) today ticked off Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for defending the infusion of RM2.6 billion into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal bank accounts.
“Khairy’s statement that a supposedly political donation is not a crime shows how Umno belittles issues of integrity and governance,” said GHB communications chief Faiz Fadzil Noor, as quoted by Malaysiakini.
Faiz, who is a lawyer, said there was a possibility of charging Najib with corruption under the MACC Act even if the RM2.6 billion was a donation.
He said even donations could be considered gratification under Section 3 of the act if either the donor or the receiver had a vested interest.
Referring to claims about the funds being used for the last general election, Faiz said this raised concerns about the integrity of the polls.
“If it is true, the political donation has tainted the legitimacy of the 13th general election results, since a large amount of money had been used in the election without it being declared to the Election Commission,” he said.
Malaysiakini also reported remarks by DAP Youth chief Teo Kok Seong that were critical of Khairy for allegedly playing down the seriousness of the issue.
“The RM2.6 billion received by the Prime Minister is enough to cover Negeri Sembilan’s budget for 6.5 years,” said Teo, who is the MP for Rasah, a constituency in Negeri Sembilan, which is also Khairy’s home state.
“As the amount of the political donation is huge, I believe the Prime Minister owes Malaysians an explanation,” he said. “It is the Prime Minister’s responsibility to explain openly about the RM2.6 billion and reveal who gave him the amount.”
