JOHOR WILL BE NAJIB'S WATERLOO: From Crown Prince to Muhyiddin to MB...

JOHOR WILL BE NAJIB'S WATERLOO: From Crown Prince to Muhyiddin to MB...
Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin has today signalled that there are fissures in Umno, following the ouster of Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy prime minister.
Since Muhyiddin's removal, political developments in Johor have come under the spotlight. Johor is not only Muhyiddin's home state but also the birthplace of Umno and its first president.
And if recent events are any indication, it might even be the birthplace of Umno's latest revolt.
On Sunday, Muhyiddin and Khaled were granted an audience by Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and crown prince Tunku Ismail. This is a statement in itself.
Following this, Tunku Ismail published a photograph of their meeting through the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page. It was perhaps a reminder to everyone that the palace was keeping a close watch on Umno.
Muhyiddin-Khaled tag team?
This morning, Khaled decided to urge Umno grassroots to speak up, stressing that silence was not an option when Umno strays from its struggle to defend certain people out of "loyalty" and when corruption becomes a culture while trust is betrayed.
"Umno cannot stay silent when the party no longer prioritises the Malay struggle but is used to defend certain groups in the name of loyalty and party discipline.
"The time has come for Umno to move forward, to be more proactive and dominant," he said.
What was interesting about this statement was the fact that Khaled was echoing sentiments raised by Muhyiddin during his now infamous speech to the Cheras Umno division on July 26.
Muhyiddin was removed from the Cabinet two days later.
Back in his home state of Johor, he told the Kluang Umno division AGM on Sunday that he would not stop talking about 1MDB.
"I said I won't keep quiet. As a deputy president why should I? I need to speak up," he said, while noting that some of his friends had urged him to keep a low profile.
Plans to rally?
Muhyiddin also recounted how he was involved in a "bigger crisis" faced by Umno in 1988.
At the time, Muhyiddin said he was tasked in maintaining unity in Umno after the party was declared illegal by the Supreme Court, following a tussle between then president Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Razaleigh was supported by then deputy prime minister Musa Hitam, an influential Johor leader and Kota Tinggi MP.
Muhyiddin said he organised a "massive rally" in the name of "Malay unity" to convince Johor Umno members to sign the membership form of the newly formed Umno Baru.
Perhaps Muhyiddin was hinting that another "massive rally" was in the offing and his subsequent audience by the Johor royals on the same day was designed to look like an endorsement.
There has been no indication whatsoever what actually transpired during the meeting, but Khaled's statement today appears to lend support to this theory.
Battleground Johor
This weekend, Muhyiddin will once again be addressing Johor Umno grassroots as he is officiating the Pagoh Umno division AGM on Saturday.
Malaysiakini understands that he will also be meeting division leaders from across the state in Johor Bahru and possibly be granted another audience with the sultan.
According to a party source, there are some Johor division leaders who are looking towards piling further pressure on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to respond to corruption allegations and the 1MDB controversy, just as the Kluang division did last Sunday.
However, Muhyiddin is unlikely to garner 100 percent support from Johor as some divisions such as Sembrong, Batu Pahat and Pengerang are headed by known Najib supporters.
Despite this, the upcoming Umno divisional AGMs is set to be the perfect battleground for self-proclaimed "party man" Muhyiddin.
As the Johor state charter says, "Kepada Allah Berserah" (Submit to God). - M'kini
