“How does he know three million Umno members support him? If you read on the internet and on Twitter, there are so many people calling for him to resign.
“And these are Umno members who are doing this. I am an Umno member,” said Dr Mahathir.
He was responding to Najib’s latest claim that the party was fully behind him, even as some Umno grassroots members have rebelled over his removal of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Dr Mahathir has become the face of a campaign within Umno to remove Najib as Umno president and prime minister over what he has termed is the latter’s mismanagement of the country and the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
