Baby panda but at what cost?

Why the jubilation over the baby panda when this is merely part of a trade deal – a ‘sweetener’ between two governments, both with atrocious conservation records.

There can be no cause for celebration at the news of the baby panda born at Zoo Negara.
First and foremost, there was never any conservation reason behind this zoo or indeed Malaysia to have accepted the adult pandas from China.
This was a trade deal – a ‘sweetener’ between two governments, both with an atrocious conservation records.
There’s also the not so small matter of the US$7.7 million dollars reportedly spent on housing these two animals.
This enormous financial cost came at the expense of other zoo animals in Malaysia, which, for the most part, continue to suffer in dreadful cages in zoos managed by, not professional zoo management, but people either looking to make a fast buck out of wildlife cruelty or, who got the job because of who they know and now what they know – as happens in Perhilitan.
Are you wondering what you can do about all this cruelty? The easiest and cheapest thing anyone can do is to stay away from visiting all zoos and wildlife parks.
This way you will also avoid distressing yourself and your family and your money will not go towards supporting cruelty to animals.
Whatever you do, do not bank on Perhilitan enforcing the law as it hasn’t happened yet.
