Zaid Ibrahim says some Malays "elect" to be slaves because they refuse to break free rather than stand up for the country and the people
KUALA LUMPUR: Will the Malays continue to defend the prime minister amid the alarming controversy surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) or will they stand up for the truth and free themselves from slavery, Zaid Ibrahim has commented.
Asking these pertinent questions on Twitter, Zaid said, “It’s the time of reckoning for these Malays. Do they forever remain as slaves or will they stand up for the country and for the people?”
These comments come after the setting-up last week of a special task force to investigate allegations made by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on July 3 that USD700 million of 1MDB-linked funds had found its way into the private bank accounts of Najib Razak.
The special task force is headed by the Attorney-General, Abdul Gani Patail; and aided by Inspector-General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar; Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission head Abu Kassim and Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
Commenting on this task force, Zaid said, “Civil servants especially the Big Four can defend Putrajaya (Najib) as suggested by Ismail Sabri and Utusan or they can defend the truth.”
He added, “Africans were slaves in the new world because they had no choice; some Malays elect to be slaves because they refused to be free.”
