Shahbudin: One story may be behind SR’s blocking

It was Rosmah who demanded action against the Sarawak Report after it published her personal banking details

KUALA LUMPUR: A political analyst thinks that the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) may have blocked the Sarawak Report because of its one and only report on Rosmah Mansor, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s wife.
Alternatively, the report on Rosmah may have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. “The government may have felt that it had no choice but to act now and act firmly before the website came out with even more damaging exposes.”
“It’s clear that Najib has simply been paying lip service to his oft-cited statement that the era of government knows best, and all, was over.”
The analyst reminded, in his latest blog posting, that besides giving Bank Negara 72 hours to act on the disclosure of her personal banking transactions, Rosmah through her lawyers urged MCMC to act against the Sarawak Report under the MCMC Act 1988 (Act 588). “It’s clear that with just one report on Rosmah, which was acknowledged as true, the Sarawak Report was blocked.”
“The excuse given by the lawyer was that it was a personal account which was opened in 1984 and therefore the act of reporting on its contents was held to be in violation of the laws of Malaysia.”
The last damaging material on the Sarawak Report, reiterated Shahbudin Husin, was not on 1MDB or Najib but on Rosmah. “It was alleged that she, through her aide Roslan Sohari, had deposited RM2 million in her personal bank account within a period of less than three months.”
The bank account, the branch name and the transactions, recalled the analyst, were all confirmed by her through her lawyers. “However, the complaint was that the disclosure was inappropriate, calculated to hurt the feelings of the Prime Minister’s wife and disrupt her daily life.”
The government, he said, should in fact take legal action against the Sarawak Report if it believes that it has a case against the website.
“The reports on 1MDB and Najib carried by the website are nothing new. It has been going on for months and has become public knowledge,” said the analyst. “The government can’t think at this late stage that it would henceforth be the only source of information on the issues raised by the Sarawak Report.”
Shahbudin pointed out that if the MCMC’s reason for blocking the Sarawak Report was to be believed, the question that arises was why it was not done much earlier when the website was churning out tonnes of material on various scandals in Sarawak and Malaysia. “The MCMC had cited national stability considerations.”
