KUALA LUMPUR: Religious authorities and personalities should step up to educate and admonish those who abuse religion for the sake of violence, says MCA’s Ti Lian Ker.
In a statement today, the MCA religious harmony bureau chairman condemned the recent rioting at Low Yat Plaza, calling the descent to violence and the authorities’ subsequent failure to protect the victims an indication of the nation’s apathy towards the blatantly wrong and sinful.
“Religious authorities and personalities cannot be oblivious to the incidents at Low Yat on the news,” said Ti, who urged them to actively educate their followers that violence towards the innocent is wrong, unjustified, and a shame to their faith and religion.
He described his horror at the video he saw of Muslim men at Low Yat Plaza dragging a boy out of his car and kicking him senseless while shouting ‘Allahuakbar’.
“This act of violence and intolerance is a no-no at any time, especially during the holy month of Ramadhan. I appeal to the ulamas and/or religious authorities and personalities to advise their followers on the adherence of Islamic teachings and its spirit,” said Ti.
“The authorities must be more vigilant and the true teachings of Islam must be imparted on deviants.”
Ti called on the religious authorities to help ensure that such incidents were not repeated, as such things gave God and religion a bad name.
