The manufacturer of the trains for Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB)’s new electric train service (ETS) has until Thursday to fix the bug in the automatic train protection (ATP) system, which is causing one of the trains to repeatedly fail the fault-free running test for safety and reliability.
The Star reported that CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd was working round the clock to fix the problem before the deadline given to it by the Land Public Tranport Commission (SPAD).
ATP is a critical safety standard to prevent collisions and derailment in the event of human failure by the automatic application of brakes whenever a fault is detected. When that happens, the train is slowed down and occasionally, has to be restarted.
The Class 92 train set with the glitch costs RM50 million. Codenamed ETS201, it was the model used in the media demonstration during the transport minister’s visit to the yard in Batu Gajah earlier this month
The English daily said CSR Rolling Stock Centre (M) Sdn Bhd general manager Wang Luke had admitted that the trigger for ETS201’s  ATP system “unknown” and that CRS was working with on-board equipment supplier, Bombardier, to rectify the problem.
A KTMB source was also reported to have said that the manufacturer was obligated to ensure that the train sets met SPAD’s approval as the trains were yet to be officially handed over.
SPAD chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal reportedly said that while KTMB was under pressure for its new ETS fleet to perform, the commission would not be issuing its approval until all its requirements were met.
