Members from NGOs will strengthen new party, says GHB’s Mujahid

The new Islamist party envisioned by the Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB), or New Hope Movement, will be strengthened by the diverse membership of people from various non-governmental organisations, said Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.
"When the NGO members join the party, they will bring the strengths and experiences of their respective NGOs with them, while embracing the struggles of the new party.
"They will use their NGO experience and contribute to the party. We will surely benefit from our association with the NGOs," Mujahid, a member of the GHB central committee, told The Malaysian Insider.
"We found that everyone was on the same page. So we are organising everyone in a joint committee. Soon, we will be coming together as one in the new party.”
The NGOs that have expressed support for GHB include Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim), the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih), Lensa, and the Anak Muda group with 146 youths led by young activist Adam Adli Abd Halim.
There are civil society members supporting the movement as well, although Mujahid did not mention any names.
Mujahid said he also hoped to meet prominent banker Datuk Seri Nazir Razak after the month-long Aidilfitri celebrations.
"After Raya, I hope to meet him and talk because Nazir has the same interest in new politics. Maybe we can join hands or we could give mutual support based on issues.”
Nazir, who is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's brother, is also planning to set up an NGO of his own with Global Movement of Moderates' chief executive officer Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
Admitting that it would not be easy to unite the people coming from various NGOs with different struggles and backgrounds, Mujahid said such diversity would make GHB unique as it pushed forward into the future.
"We have this big aim to save the country, to create a new country that is free of corruption and have new leaders who can really deliver with a leadership that is transparent.
"That unites this whole bunch of people. I know it is going to be a tough challenge but there is one thing everyone agrees on and that is the need for new politics.
"Everyone wants new politics and to redefine the way we do things, to relook into issues of race, politics and the economy. This is the uniting factor in this new group, namely among the younger generation."
Another NGO that has now declared its support for GHB is the Peoples' Movement against Racism (GAP).
Its information chief Dr S. Vignes said race and religion, or anything discriminatory, should no longer define Malaysia.
"What we once knew as muhibbah has come to naught due to the lack of perseverance by our leaders.
"This new platform by GHB will give people hope that change is possible," he told The Malaysian Insider.
However, he said GHB, the new party and the new opposition coalition the leaders were planning must be better than the defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
He said if the new coalition failed to function strictly on a common policy, it could make people think Barisan Nasional was still a better choice because its component parties did not bicker.
