Manglish found in privately produced school workbooks

Education Ministry not responsible, says deputy minister P Kamalanathan.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry said that it is not responsible for any error or poor language in workbooks published by private sector companies.
Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan said the private publications do not come under the ministry and neither does it issue licences to private publications for reference books.
Several Science and Mathematics workbooks for students preparing for public examinations were found littered with bad grammar.
A Form Three Science reference book, for instance, was littered with jumbled tenses and wrong prepositions.
The publisher however noted on the cover that the workbook included actual questions from last year’s Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 test papers, and were used with the permission of the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate.
The publishing company’s manager, Mohd Sharizan Walat, said the questions that were used in the workbooks were taken from the Examinations Syndicate’s 2014 test papers.
The questions and the suggested answers were exactly what appeared in the Examinations Syndicate’s test papers, said Sharizan in a report carried by The Star Online.
“We checked several times,” he insisted.
Kamalanathan countered that if there were errors in the original exam questions, the parents of students who took the tests would have complained.
The ministry does not check on private publishers, and teachers, parents and students are free to choose the workbooks they want to use, he added.
