Malaysian diplomats in Australia have incurred three fines for traffic or parking offences that are still unpaid, according to a report by Fairfax Media today.

The figure ties with the number of outstanding fines incurred by Bangladeshi, Moroccan, Nepalese, and Swiss consulates in the country, and are among the nearly 300 fines still unpaid by foreign diplomats across Australia.

The report did not provide a breakdown of the figures for most countries’ embassies including the Malaysian High Commission in Australia, but mentions that the total of all the nearly 300 fines amount to over A$75,000.

However, the three fines that Malaysia and other countries had incurred are far eclipsed by those of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia alone.

“In figures obtained by Fairfax Media, Saudi officials had unpaid fines totalling almost $25,000 for the 12 months to March 2015. The Saudi Embassy racked up 120 fines – one almost every three days – with the highest A$989 for speeding through a red light camera.

“It is the second year consecutive the Saudis have had the most unpaid fines. In 12 months to March 2014 Saudi diplomats and privileged persons accumulated 125 unpaid fines.

“In the latest figures, the Saudi diplomats were fined for parking in a space reserved for medical practitioners, running red lights and parking in no stopping and loading zones,” the report said.

The figures are based on figures obtained from requested filed under the Freedom of Information Act to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and is for the period from March 2, 2014 to March 2, 2015.

In a distant second place for the highest number of unpaid fines, is the Embassy of the Russian Federation with 24 outstanding, closely followed by the Jordanian embassy with 23 unpaid fines.

The report says that these fines may never be paid due to diplomatic immunity that the consulates enjoy under the 1961 Vienna Convention.

However it also quotes an Office of State Revenue spokesperson for the state of New South Wales, saying that there is no diplomatic immunity for parking or speeding fines issued in the state.
