'FIRESTORM' 1MDB, GST ANGER: Snap election unlikely for Sarawak now

'FIRESTORM' 1MDB, GST ANGER: Snap election unlikely for Sarawak now
KUALA LUMPUR - A snap election in Sarawak is unlikely because pressing issues remain unresolved, state Barisan Nasional (BN) sources said.
The introduction of the Goods and Services Tax on April 1 saw average cost of living shooting up and this had to be addressed urgently, the sources added.
Besides, they said, the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue is like a 'firestorm" roiling through the political landscape. "It is imprudent and illogical to call for an election at this time," they said.
State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar had said a one-day seating fixed for next month could indicate snap polls.
This had heightened speculations, both here and in Sarawak.
Dr Sivamurugan Pandyan, a political analysts in USM, also said BN had several issues to iron out before calling for polls.
"One is that (BN) splinter parties remain splintered like Parti Tenaga and United Peoples Party.
As yet, nothing has been worked out to accommodate them," he said. Besides, the matter of 11 new seats that the Election Commission had formed last year, is still in the courts and needs a resolution.
BN sources said the most likely time for an election, that is expected to be won by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, would be either March or April next year.
The state assembly expires on June 20. - Sundaily
